Each Monday, Wednesday and Friday of the fall semester we'll be bringing you "Mav Spotlight" profiles of current Mercy student-athletes as we learn more about our athletes outside of their sport. Today we feature men's soccer senior Joel Serrano.

Quick Bio

Serrano, an Arecibo, Puerto Rico native, is in his senior year at Mercy, where he majors in Behavioral Science. The senior appeared in 19 games in goal for the Mavericks last season and went 11-4-3 with 38 saves. Serrano was named Third Team All-Region by the United Soccer Coaches and Second Team All-ECC. He made three penalty kick saves to lead Mercy to the ECC Championship and was named Most Outstanding Player.

Getting to Know Joel

Q: Who or what inspired you to play sports?

A: My Dad and Grandpa

Q: What is your favorite sport memory at Mercy College?

A: Winning the ECC Championship in penalties and being the MVP.

Q: What is your biggest accomplishment on or off the field?

A: Being called up for the Puerto Rican national team and being named All-American at my previous college.

Q: Do you have any pregame superstitions?

A: I touch the left, right and center post before the game.

Q: If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

A: Pasta

Q: If you could have any superpower what would it be and why?

A: Super speed

Q: What is your favorite movie or TV show?

A: Breaking Bad and Prison Break

Q: What is your major and what do you want to do with it?

A: Behavioral Science, I want to go into the field of sport psychology.  

Q: What do you hope to do when your playing days are over?

A: My goal is to go pro and complete my masters.

A: Instagram

A: Basketball

A: LeBron James

A: Real Madrid
