Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy looks to snap a three-game losing streak and is coming off a 95-80 loss at No. 17/20 St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday. The Mavericks are looking to win at UDC for the second year in a row after defeating the Firebirds 69-58 last season. Mercy currently sits a game behind Queens and New York Tech for the sixth and final ECC Tournament spot. The Mavericks are led by one-time ECC Player of the Week and two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week redshirt junior Bryan Griffin who leads the nation in rebounds per game (14.1) and defensive rebounds per game (10.29). The forward is also No. 5 nationally in total rebounds (239), No. 6 nationally in double-doubles (12) and No. 9 nationally in offensive rebounds per game (3.76). Griffin also averages 19.1 points per game (No. 4), shoots 52.0 percent from the floor (No. 4 in ECC) and leads the ECC in blocks per game (2.0). Junior Nakeem Hamilton is second on the team with 13.1 points per game and leads the team with 2.3 assists per game. Senior Lamont Williams Jr. is coming off a 26-point outing at St. Thomas Aquinas on Saturday and is third on the team with 7.5 points per game. Freshman Garrett Kirkland is a one-time ECC Rookie of the Week and is putting up 7.4 points per game in 19.8 minutes per game.
Scouting the Firebirds
UDC is on a three-game losing streak and is coming off a 79-77 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas on January 25th. The Firebirds are third in the ECC in steals per game (8.3) and lead the ECC in blocks per game (4.1). UDC is led by sophomore Juanye Colon who is averaging a team-high 15.2 points per game and 2.0 steals per game. Senior Zachary Olukanni is second on the team with 14.3 points per game and averages a team-high 7.8 rebounds per game. Senior Aaren Smith is third on the team with 12.3 points per game and junior Cheyenne Nettleton rounds out four Firebirds who average in double figures with 10.9 points per game. Senior Kerry Kirkwood dishes out a team-high 3.7 assists per game and sophomore Jahmir Marable Williams puts up 7.3 points per game.
