Mercy Athletics Moment #10: John Mooradian, Miguel Ortiz Sanchez and Anthony Murphy Reach Career Milestones and Move Up in Baseball Record Book

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 9, 2020) – For the sixth year in a row, Mercy College Athletics will recap the year by counting down the Top-10 most memorable moments of the 2019-20 season, with all 10 sports represented.

Mercy College Athletics will release a Top-10 moment, as chosen by the athletics staff, with a recap every Thursday for the next ten weeks, culminating with the top moment from the 2019-20 athletic year being unveiled on Thursday, June 11th.

No. 10 – John Mooradian, Miguel Ortiz Sanchez and Anthony Murphy Reach Career Milestones and Move up in Baseball Record Book

Coming in at No. 10 in our 2019-20 Top-10 Moments is baseball who had senior John Mooradian and graduate students Miguel Ortiz Sanchez and Anthony Murphy reach career milestones and move up in the baseball record book.

Mooradian entered the 2020 season with 96 runs scored and 13 triples, 171 hits, 88 RBI and 76 stolen bases. The 96 runs, 171 hits, 88 RBI and 76 stolen bases all ranked in the top ten in school history entering this season. The shortstop also was tied for first in program history in triples and was named NCBWA Preseason Third Team All-American and Preseason All-East Region First Team.

After going 1-for-8 with a run and RBI in the season-opening doubleheader at Barton on February 15th, Mooradian went 3-for-9 with three runs and two RBI in the doubleheader at Barton on February 16th. The senior recorded a triple in game one which set a new school record for career triples with 14, surpassing the previous mark of 13 set by Bobby Nigrello from 1989-91. With the three runs, Mooradian also recorded his 100th career run becoming the fifth Maverick to reach the mark.

Despite the season being shortened due to COVID-19, Mooradian hit .333 with 16 hits, 12 runs, eight RBI, five doubles and was named to the ECC Honor Roll once. He led the team in doubles and runs and was third on the team in RBI. The shortstop ended the season ranked No. 1 in program history in career triples (14), No. 2 in at bats (571), No. 2 in hits (187), No. 3 in runs (108), No. 3 in stolen bases (79), No. 4 in RBI (96), No. 4 in total bases (253), No. 8 in doubles (29). The senior also holds single-season school records in at bats (191), hits (75) and RBI (50).

Ortiz Sanchez began the 2020 season needing just four hits to reach 100 for his career. The graduate student went 3-for-8 with two RBI in the season-opening doubleheader at Barton on February 15th. The second baseman needed just one hit entering the second doubleheader of the season on February 16th and went 1-for-3 with a double to record his 100th career hit.

The graduate student had a strong season despite the season being shortened to 12 games. He batted a team-high .455 with 20 hits, 14 RBI, eight runs, three doubles and a team-high five stolen bases. Ortiz Sanchez was named NCBWA East Region Hitter of the Week on February 18th and was named ECC Player of the Week once. He led the ECC in average and led the team in RBI, hits and stolen bases. Ortiz Sanchez ended the season with 116 career hits, 26 career doubles and 65 career RBI.

Murphy entered the 2020 season among the program's career leaders in several categories and moved further up those lists with 12 hits, seven runs, four home runs and ten RBI. The graduate student was named to the ECC Honor Roll once and led the ECC in home runs. He also was second on the team in RBI and third in hits.

The graduate student ends the 2020 season ranked No. 2 in career RBI (116), No. 7 in at bats (519), No. 4 in hits (167), No. 10 in doubles (28), No. 5 in home runs (16) and No. 3 in total bases (261). He had a season-high two home runs with three RBI and two runs scored in game two at Barton on February 16th and added a home run and triple with two RBI and two runs in game one win over Staten Island on March 8th.

Mooradian, Ortiz Sanchez and Murphy have combined for 470 hits and 277 RBI in their careers as Mavericks and will go down as three of the most productive Mavs in program history.
