DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 14, 2020) - For the sixth year in a row, Mercy College Athletics will recap the year by counting down the Top-10 most memorable moments of the 2019-20 season, with all 10 sports represented.
Mercy College Athletics will release a Top-10 moment, as chosen by the athletics staff, with a recap every Thursday for the next ten weeks, culminating with the top moment from the 2019-20 athletic year being unveiled on Thursday, June 11th.
No. 5 – Bryan Griffin Sets Multiple School Records Throughout Season
Coming in at No. 5 in our 2019-20 Top-10 Moments is senior Bryan Griffin from men's basketball who set multiple school records during the season.
Griffin entered the 2019-20 season off a strong year in 2018-19 in which he was named NABC Second Team All-District, First Team All-ECC and First Team All-Met. He set a single-season school record with 300 rebounds in 2018-19 and averaged a team-high 20.3 points and 11.5 rebounds per game.
The senior opened the 2019-20 campaign with a game-high 26 points as the Mavericks opened their season against Southern New Hampshire on November 9th. The next day Griffin posted his first double-double of the season by way of a game-high 27 points and 14 rebounds against Dominican. After the two games, Griffin was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the first time on November 11th.
The forward continued his strong play with 22 points and 14 rebounds against Felician on November 13th. He also scored in double figures against Post and Pace before leading the Mavericks to their first win of the season on November 23rd against Georgian Court with a team-high 17 points and eight rebounds.
Griffin got back to his double-double ways when he posted a game-high 26 points and 14 rebounds against Concordia on November 26th. After the game, the senior was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the second time on December 2nd.
The native of Pomona netted another double-double on December 10th against Nyack and was named to the ECC Honor Roll a third time on December 16th. Against the Warriors, the senior had a career-high-tying 26 rebounds with 17 points. Griffin was also named Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention for the first time.
On January 1st, Griffin posted 18 points and 17 rebounds against Adelphi and was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week following the game on January 6th.
In the Mavericks next game, Griffin recorded another double-double by way of 10 points and 18 rebounds against New York Tech on January 8th. The senior posted two more double-doubles against District of Columbia and Queens before scoring 28 points with a career-high-tying 26 rebounds against Molloy on January 18th. After the game, Griffin was named ECC Player and Defensive Player of the Week and was named MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention.
Griffin netted another double-double against nationally-ranked Bridgeport on January 25th before recording a career-high 34 points with 18 rebounds against St. Thomas Aquinas on February 1st. The senior was named to the ECC Honor Roll after the game and was tabbed MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention again.
The forward posted his eighth straight double-double with 13 points and 17 rebounds against District of Columbia on February 5th. On February 8th, Griffin had three blocks against New York Tech to set a new school record for career blocks with 119. He surpassed the previous record of 118 set in 1994-95 by Chris Middleton. The Mavericks also ended up earning a 76-68 win over the Bears. Following the games, Griffin was tabbed ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the third time and was named MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention.
Mercy headed to Western New York where they took on Roberts Wesleyan and Daemen. Against Roberts Wesleyan on February 14th, Griffin had a game-high 27 points and 18 rebounds and recorded his 1,000th career point. He became the 14th Maverick to record 1,000 points in program history. The forward then posted 27 points and seven rebounds at Daemen on February 16th. After the games, Griffin was named to the ECC Honor Roll.
On February 19th, Griffin set a new single-season school record for rebounds against Molloy. The senior had eight rebounds in the game and surpassed his own previous single-season school record of 300 rebounds. He ended the game with 306 rebounds during the season to date.
Griffin recorded a game-high 28 points and 20 rebounds on Senior Day against Queens on February 22nd. The senior was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week again following the contest against the Knights.
The Mavericks concluded their season on February 29th with a matchup against nationally-ranked Bridgeport. Griffin finished with 17 points and a game-high 21 rebounds. The forward ended the contest with 708 career rebounds, setting a new school record for career rebounds. He surpassed the previous school record of 703 set by Frank Bailey. Griffin also finished the season with a school-record 347 rebounds.
Griffin ended the season with a school-record 128 career blocks and 708 career rebounds. He also ranked seventh all-time in program history in points with 1,100 and had a single-season school record of 347 rebounds. The senior was named First Team All-ECC and First Team All-Met for the second straight year and was named D2CCA Second Team All-Region. On the year, Griffin averaged 19.6 points, 14.5 rebounds and 2.0 blocks per game on 51.8 percent shooting. He was a one-time ECC Player of the Week, four-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week and was named MBWA Division II-III Player of the Week Honorable Mention four times. He also was named to the ECC Honor Roll five times.
The senior was crowned the NCAA Division II Men's Basketball Statistical Champion in Rebounds Per Game and ranked No. 2 nationally in total rebounds (347), No. 3 in double-doubles (17) and No. 7 in offensive rebounds per game (3.83).
The 2019-20 season proved to be a historic one for Griffin.
