WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (Nov. 12, 2021) – Mercy College men's soccer junior Matthias Kuhn (Viernheim, Germany/University of Mannheim) has been named the ECC Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Year and graduate student Pau Echarri (Madrid, Spain/Universidad Ceu San Pablo) was tabbed Rookie of the Year, headlining four Mavericks named to the All-Conference teams as announced by the conference earlier today. Kuhn and Echarri were named to the First Team and seniors Archie Jones (London, England/Northbridge) and Rainiero Salas (Panama City, Panama/Alderson Broaddus University) were tabbed to the Third Team.
Kuhn is named Defensive Player of the Year for the first time and earns First Team accolades for the first time after being named Third Team All-ECC as a freshman. The junior was named ECC Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week once. Kuhn ranked third on the team in points with 15 by way of seven goals and one assist. He had a team-high three game-winning goals and helped lead a defense that allowed 16 goals in 16 games.
Echarri takes home Rookie of the Year honors in his first year as a Maverick. The graduate student was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week once and ECC Rookie of the Year twice after leading the team with 20 points on nine goals and two assists. He recorded a career-high three goals in the Mavericks win over D'Youville on November 6th. Echarri ranked fourth in the ECC in goals and was sixth in points.
Jones receives All-Conference recognition for the first time after ranking second on the team in points. He ended the season with 17 points on six goals and a team-high five assists. Jones scored the game-winning goal in Mercy's 4-2 win over Queens on October 22nd. The senior ranked second in the ECC in assists.
Salas also is named All-Conference for the first time after playing in 14 games with 12 starts. The one-time ECC Honor Roll recipient had eight points on two goals and four assists. He ranked second on the team in assists and scored goals against Southern Connecticut State and Adelphi. Salas ranked fourth in the ECC in assists.
