Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 93-63 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas in their ECC opener on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by junior James Taylor Jr. who had a game-high-tying 16 points. Sophomores Jay Turner and Justinas Norkus added nine points. The Mavericks are looking to pick up their first win over Chestnut Hill since December 15, 2012. Mercy is 1-2 all-time against the Griffins with the first meeting coming in 2011. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Mercy is currently led by junior James Taylor Jr. who averages a team-high 12.2 points per game and has scored in double figures in his last three games. Junior Garrett Kirkland is tied for second on the team with 10.3 points per game and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is shooting a team-best 40.9 percent from downtown and has a team-high 18 threes on the year. Junior Elijah Mitchell also averages 10.3 points per game and averages a team-high 1.6 steals per game. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal averages 9.7 points and a team-high 8.2 rebounds per game in four starts. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll two weeks ago and is third in the ECC in rebounds per game.
Scouting the Griffins
Chestnut Hill is coming off a 78-66 win over UDC on Tuesday, which extended their win streak to three games. The Griffins were picked sixth in the CACC South Division Coaches' Poll after going 6-22 in 2019-20. Chestnut Hill is led by Nigel Haughton who averages a team-high 14.1 points and 1.9 steals per game on 48.2 percent shooting. MJ Iraldi posts 13.9 points per game on 50.0 percent shooting and Amir Warrick is the third Griffin to average double figures in scoring with 10.6 points per game. David Erebor records a team-high 7.3 rebounds per game and Warrick dishes out a team-high 2.3 assists per game.
