Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 79-75 loss to Roberts Wesleyan on Friday. The Mavericks were led by junior Brandon Wilson who had a career-high 22 points. Junior James Taylor Jr. had a season-high 19 points and junior Elijah Mitchell had 13 points. Mercy is looking to pick up their first win over Bridgeport since December 21, 2013 and their first win at Bridgeport since 2005. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Wilson was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday for the first time this season after averaging a team-high 12.5 points per game last week. Mercy is currently led by Taylor Jr. who averages a team-high 12.4 points per game and has scored in double figures in six of the eight games he has played in. Mitchell is second on the team with 11.1 points per game and leads the team with 2.7 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Junior Garrett Kirkland is fourth on the team with 8.8 points per game and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is shooting a team-best 35.2 percent from downtown and has a team-high 19 threes on the year. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal averages 9.7 points and a team-high 8.2 rebounds per game in four starts. He was named to the ECC Honor Roll two weeks ago and is third in the ECC in rebounds per game.
Scouting the Purple Knights
Bridgeport is coming off a 97-74 loss at St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, extending their losing streak to two games. The Purple Knights were picked third in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 24-4 in 2019-20. In 2019-20, Bridgeport won the ECC Regular Season Championship and qualified for the NCAA Tournament. The Purple Knights are led by sophomore Tim Dawson who ranks fourth in the ECC in points per game (14.3) and averages a team-high 3.8 assists and 2.4 steals per game. Junior Malcolm Moye averages 12.4 points per game on 46.8 percent shooting and junior Mason Williams posts 10.9 points per game on 2.6 made threes per game. Senior Nemanja Zubac averages a team-high 6.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game.
