Men's Soccer Senior Joel Serrano Called Up to Puerto Rican National Team

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 12, 2021) – Mercy College men's soccer senior Joel Serrano (Arecibo, P.R./Marshalltown CC) has been called up to the Puerto Rican National Soccer Team for the CONCACAF World Cup qualifiers that take place later this month.

"Ever since Joel joined the program in 2019, you knew his hard work and dedication would get him to this point in his young career.  He is a very talented young man both on and off the field and we are very excited for him to have the opportunity to represent his country at the senior level. We all wish him the best of luck and we know he will make us all proud," stated Mercy College Men's Soccer Head Coach Pedro Velazquez.

Puerto Rico will participate in Group F during the first qualifying round. It begins its four-game round-robin schedule March 24 against Saint Kitts and Nevis. A team must win its group to advance to the second qualifying round. The 2022 World Cup is scheduled to run from Nov. 21-Dec. 18, 2022 in Qatar.

Serrano appeared in 19 games making 18 starts in his first season as a Maverick in 2019. He went 11-4-3 with seven shutouts, 38 saves, a 0.81 goal-against average and .717 save percentage. Serrano was named Third Team All-Region and Second Team All-ECC and was named to the ECC Honor Roll once. He helped lead the Mavericks to the ECC Championship, earning the tournament's Most Outstanding Player award after making three penalty kick saves in the Mavericks win over Bridgeport in the Championship Game.
