Game Preview: No. 16 Women's Lacrosse Plays at Jefferson on Friday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 30, 2021) – The No. 16 Mercy College women's lacrosse team plays at Jefferson University on Friday, April 2nd at 3 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks
  • Mercy is coming off a 10-1 victory over Molloy on Tuesday. The Mavericks were led by junior Taylor Bishop and senior Briana Corace who both scored two goals.
  • Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and junior Micayla Brady was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 4-1 during the 2020 COVID-19 shortened season. Mercy went 15-5 during their last full season in 2019 and won their first ECC Championship, making the program's second NCAA Tournament appearance.
  • Friday's game will be the first road game for the Mavericks since March 11, 2020.
  • Mercy is currently ranked No. 16 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll.
  • Mercy looks to start 4-1 for the second straight year. 
  • Mercy has had five straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last four seasons the tournament was held.
  • The Mavericks are 4-3 all-time against the Rams and have won the last four meetings. The two teams last met on March 4, 2020 with Mercy earning a 13-9 win.
  • Graduate student Mary Mackie has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and Bishop has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once. Mackie has a team-high 12 points on nine goals with three assists.
  • Bishop currently has a team-high 11 goals on the year. Junior Kerri Cummings is third on the team with 10 points on three goals and a team-high seven assists.
  • Junior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk is fourth on the team with nine points by way of four goals and five assists. Senior Briana Corace has added seven goals and one assist. Sophomore Sydney Corley was named ECC Rookie of the Week on March 15th after scoring a career-high two goals in the win over St. Thomas Aquinas.
  • Brady leads the defense for the Mavericks and was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week last week. The junior has 16 ground balls and a team-high 16 caused turnovers. Junior Jules Keenan has recorded four goals, three assists, six ground balls, seven caused turnovers and a team-high 23 draw controls. Senior Kellie Znaniecki has also played well recording 15 ground balls with 17 draw controls.
  • Senior Emma Jacobsen has made the start in goal in all four games this season and is 3-0 with a .519 save percentage and 14 saves.
  • Mercy currently leads Division II in assists per game (11) and free position percentage (.750). They also rank No. 3 nationally in points per game (27).
Scouting the Rams
  • Jefferson last played on Tuesday and came away with a 17-3 win over Chestnut Hill.
  • The Rams were picked second in the CACC Preseason Poll after going 0-4 last year.
  • During their last full season in 2019, the Rams went 10-6 and lost in the CACC Tournament Championship Game.
  • Jefferson is playing their second home game of the season. They defeated Chestnut Hill in their last home game on March 9th.
  • The Rams last beat Mercy on April 11, 2015.
  • Leading the Rams offensively this season is freshman Erin Avanzato who has a team-high 14 points on a team-high 11 goals with three assists and a team-high 14 draw controls. One-time CACC Rookie of the Week Ellie Lefton is second on the team with 12 points on two goals and a team-high 10 assists.
  • Senior Erin Eckert rounds out three Rams with double-digit points this season. She has seven goals and four assists with nine ground balls and 12 draw controls.
  • Junior Erin Campbell has nine goals, a team-high 11 ground balls and a team-high-tying five caused turnovers. Sophomore Melanie Goldstein has started all three games and is 3-0 with nine saves and a .409 save percentage.
Next Game
Mercy resumes action on Wednesday, April 7th when they host Bridgeport at 4 p.m.
