Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 78-53 loss at Staten Island on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by juniors James Taylor Jr. and Elijah Mitchell who both had a team-high-tying nine points. Mercy is looking to pick up their first win over UDC since December 8, 2018. The Mavericks last home win over UDC came on January 6, 2018. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Mercy is currently led by junior James Taylor Jr. who averages a team-high 12.6 points per game and has scored in double figures in eight of the 12 games he has played in. Junior Elijah Mitchell is second on the team with 11.3 points per game and leads the team with 2.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Junior Brandon Wilson has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and is third on the team averaging 10.3 points per game. He is second on the team shooting 41.4 percent from the floor and has scored in double figures in five of his last six games. Junior Garrett Kirkland is fifth on the team with 8.0 points per game and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is shooting a team-best 37.3 percent from downtown and has a team-high 25 threes on the year. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal averages 8.7 points and a team-high 7.6 rebounds per game in four starts. He has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once and is fourth in the ECC in rebounds per game.
Scouting the Firebirds
UDC is coming off a 103-71 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas at home on Wednesday. The Firebirds are currently on a five-game losing streak with their last win coming against D'Youville on December 17th. UDC was picked fifth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 11-17 in 2019-20. The Firebirds are led by junior Kenyon Stone who averages a team-high 16.3 points per game on a team-best 53.9 percent shooting. Junior Juanye Colon is averaging 11.0 points per game and one-time ECC Player of the Week junior Jahmir Marable-Williams is averaging 10.9 points per game to go along with a team-high 6.6 rebounds per game and 5.5 assists per game. Freshmen Tevin Curtis and Hartnel Haye both post 9.9 points per game.
