Game Preview: Men's Basketball Hosts Daemen on Sunday

Scouting the Mavericks

Mercy is coming off a 66-63 loss to D'Youville on Friday. The Mavericks were led by junior James Taylor Jr. who had a game-high 19 points. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal had a double-double with 17 points and a game-high 17 rebounds. Junior Brandon Wilson netted 13 points and junior Jonathan Lapierre had a career-high eight points and eight rebounds. The Mavericks are looking for their first-ever win over Daemen, having dropped the previous 16 meetings all-time. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Mercy is currently led by Taylor Jr. who averages a team-high 13.4 points per game and has scored in double figures in 10 of the 14 games he has played in. Junior Elijah Mitchell is second on the team with 11.3 points per game and leads the team with 2.2 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Junior Brandon Wilson has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and is third on the team averaging 10.5 points per game. He is second on the team shooting 40.6 percent from the floor and has scored in double figures in seven of his last eight games. Junior Garrett Kirkland is fifth on the team with 7.1 points per game and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is shooting a team-best 34.7 percent from downtown and has a team-high 26 threes on the year. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on Tuesday and averages 10.4 points and a team-high 9.5 rebounds per game in four starts. He has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once and is second in the ECC in rebounds per game.

Scouting the Wildcats

Daemen is coming off a 73-61 win at St. Thomas Aquinas on Friday, handing the defending ECC champions their first conference loss of the season. The Wildcats have won six games in a row and have won 15 of their last 17 conference games dating back to the start of last season. Daemen earned their third consecutive NCAA Tournament berth and captured their first regional title last March. The Wildcats were picked second in the ECC Preseason Poll and are led by two-time All-American graduate student Andrew Sischo. Sischo is the active scoring (2,591) and rebounding (1,337) leader among all NCAA Division II players. He was named ECC Preseason Player of the Year for the fourth time and currently leads the ECC in points per game (21.6) and rebounds per game (13.9). Sischo has been named ECC Player of the Week five times this season. Graduate student Sean Fasoyiro also averages double figures with 12.8 points per game and sophomore Andrew Mason posts 9.5 points per game with a team-high 2.4 made threes per game. Junior Joey Atkins and junior Ryan Salzberg have both been named ECC Defensive Player of the Week once this season.
