Scouting the Mavericks
Mercy is coming off a 65-51 win over Queens on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by junior Elijah Mitchell who had a game-high 19 points on 9-of-14 shooting. Junior Garrett Kirkland added 13 points and sophomore Jay Turner netted nine points. Mercy is looking to sweep the season series with Molloy for the first time since the 2004-05 season. Mercy was picked seventh in the ECC Coaches' Poll after going 2-5 in 2021. The top six teams in the ECC standings qualify for the ECC Tournament. Mercy made their first ECC Tournament appearance since 2016 last season. Mercy is currently led by junior James Taylor Jr. who averages a team-high 13.7 points per game and has scored in double figures in 13 of the 18 games he has played in. Junior Elijah Mitchell is fourth on the team with 9.9 points per game and leads the team with 2.4 assists and 1.6 steals per game. Junior Brandon Wilson has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and is second on the team averaging 11.2 points per game. He is second on the team shooting 41.4 percent from the floor and has scored in double figures in 10 of his last 11 games. Junior Garrett Kirkland is fifth on the team with 8.1 points per game and has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice. He is shooting a team-best 39.0 percent from downtown and has a team-high 41 threes on the year. Sophomore Jayden Dewaal was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on January 18th and averages 10.4 points and a team-high 9.6 rebounds per game and 1.8 blocks per game in nine starts. He has been named to the ECC Honor Roll once and is second in the ECC in rebounds per game.
Scouting the Lions
Molloy is coming off an 82-78 loss to St. Thomas Aquinas on Wednesday for their fourth straight loss. The Lions were picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 3-8 last season. Molloy went 12-17 during their last full season in 2019-20, qualifying for the ECC Tournament. The Lions are led by junior William Muller who averages a team-high 14.9 points and 6.3 rebounds per game. Freshman Darren Fergus is second on the team with 14.3 points per game and senior Steven Torre posts 10.2 points per game. Sophomore Kendell Ogilvie is a one-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week and averages 6.9 points per game. Fergus dishes out a team-high 4.1 assists per game and junior Frankie Phelan is fourth on the team averaging 8.0 points per game.
