WORCESTER, Mass. (Mar. 13, 2022) – Powered by graduate student Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) recording her 100th career goal, the No. 12 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 12-6 win over No. 21 Assumption University on Sunday afternoon at Brian Kelly Stadium.
The Mavericks (3-2) move back over .500 on the year and defeat the Greyhounds (2-2) for the first time since 2017.
Corace scored three goals and now has 101 career goals. She becomes the sixth Maverick in program history to record 100 goals. Senior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) had a game-high four goals and senior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) had two goals. Sophomore Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had a goal, an assist and a team-high-tying three caused turnovers. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had a goal and an assist and freshman Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) also scored. Freshman Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a team-high-tying three caused turnovers and a game-high six ground balls. Senior Katie Jelliffe (Monroe, Conn./Masuk) added two caused turnovers and two ground balls and senior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made a game-high 10 saves to earn the win.
Assumption was led by Ella Tenney and Jill Good who both had a team-high two goals. Allie Collins made eight saves to take the loss.
The Greyhounds scored the game's first two goals to take a 2-0 lead with 12:44 left in the opening quarter. It remained 2-0 until the 11:21 mark when Bishop scored a free position goal to make it 2-1. Keenan answered less than a minute later with her first goal of the day to tie the game at 2-2. Corace found the back of the net, off an assist from Rosenfeld, to give Mercy a 3-2 lead with 8:51 remaining in the quarter. Grzelaczyk later gave the Mavericks a 4-2 lead before Lauren Jakobs scored for the hosts to make it 4-3 with 5:56 on the clock. Corace capped off the scoring in the first quarter with a free position goal to give Mercy a 5-3 lead after one quarter.
Hansen gave the Mavericks a 6-3 lead with 7:55 left in the second quarter. Assumption scored the final two goals of the half to head into halftime down, 6-5.
Keenan broke the game open early in the third quarter scoring back-to-back goals in the first two minutes of the quarter to give Mercy an 8-5 lead. Bishop made it 9-5 at the 9:21 mark following her second goal of the day. Tenney made it 9-6 with 4:38 left in the quarter, but Corace and Rosenfeld closed the quarter with back-to-back goals to put Mercy up 11-6 after three quarters.
The Mavericks defense held the Greyhounds scoreless in the fourth quarter and Keenan tallied her fourth goal of the game with 4:27 remaining to cap off the win.
Assumption held a 25-24 edge in shots and Assumption held a 24-17 edge in ground balls. Draw controls were tied at 11-11.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, March 16th when they host Georgian Court at 3 p.m.
