Game Preview: No. 11 Women's Lacrosse Hosts UDC in ECC Opener on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 24, 2022) – The No. 11 Mercy College women's lacrosse team hosts University of the District of Columbia in their ECC opener on Saturday, March 26th at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off an 11-9 win over #14 Bentley on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by senior Juliana Keenan who scored the game-winning goal and by senior Madeline Garvalosa who made a season-high 12 saves.

·        On Monday, Garvalosa was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and senior Taylor Bishop was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        Last week, freshman Lindsey Shimborske was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Keenan and senior Micayla Brady were named to the Honor Roll.

·        Brady has been named ECC Defensive Player of the Week twice and has been named IWLCA Division II Defensive Player of the Week once. Keenan has been named to the ECC Honor Roll three times and Shimborske has been named to the Honor Roll once.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Brady was selected Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 12-2 during the 2021 season, winning the ECC Regular Season Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 11 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and No. 13 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        Mercy is 35-10 in their last 45 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season. The Mavericks are 17-6 at home during that stretch.

·        Mercy has had seven straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last six seasons the tournament was held.

·        The Mavericks are 6-0 all-time against UDC. The two teams last met on April 14, 2019 with Mercy earning a 20-3 victory.

·        Head Coach Dawn Sachs is just two wins shy of 100 for her career. She currently holds a 98-53 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Keenan leads the Mavericks with 28 points on a team-high 23 goals with three assists. She also has five ground balls and five caused turnovers. The senior has been named to the ECC Honor Roll three times.

·        Senior Taylor Bishop is second on the team with 23 points on 17 goals and six assists. Senior Kerri Cummings is fourth on the team with 14 points by way of four goals and a team-high 10 assists. Graduate student Briana Corace has 15 goals and one assist and recorded her 100th career goal in Mercy's win over Assumption on March 13th. She became the sixth Maverick in program history to record 100 goals. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk is fourth on the team with 14 points on 10 goals and four assists.

·       The defense is led by Brady who was named Second Team All-American by the IWLCA last season and was named Preseason First Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine. She recorded her 100th career caused turnover in the win over Lock Haven on February 24th and has a team-high 20 ground balls, 28 draw controls and 23 caused turnovers. She now has a school-record 117 career caused turnovers, surpassing the previous school record of 116 set by Talia Stagnitta in 2020. Senior Hunter Savino has 13 ground balls and 10 caused turnovers and senior Alexandra Bigilin has 11 ground balls and seven caused turnovers. Shimborske ranks second on the team with 17 caused turnovers and 18 ground balls and is third with 17 draw controls.

·        Senior Madeline Garvalosa is 5-2 in goal with 55 saves, a .545 save percentage and 7.80 goals-against average.

Scouting the Firebirds

·        UDC is coming off a 22-12 loss at Davis and Elkins on March 16th.

·        The Firebirds were picked seventh in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 0-3 in 2020. UDC did not play in 2021.

·        UDC's last win came on February 28, 2018. The Firebirds have lost 34 straight games since their last win.

·        The Firebirds are led by freshman Anna Schamens who has a team-high 29 points on a team-high 20 goals and nine assists. She also has a team-high 22 ground balls and 30 draw controls.

·        Lauryn Lopez is second on the team with 13 points by way of 10 goals and three assists. Freshman Sarai Reyes-Roman has eight points on seven goals and one assist.

·        Freshmen Michelle Mitchell and Reyes-Roman both have a team-high eight caused turnovers on the year.

·        Junior Zuleima Ulloa-Santos is 0-5 in goal with 42 saves, a .326 save percentage and 17.40 goals-against average.

Mercy resumes action on Friday, April 1st when they play at Bloomsburg at 4 p.m.
