DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 26, 2022) – Powered by 11 different Mavericks scoring, the No. 11 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 20-2 win over the University of the District of Columbia in their ECC opener on Saturday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-2, 1-0 ECC) have won four games in a row, while the Firebirds (0-7, 0-1 ECC) remain winless on the year.
Freshman Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) had a career-high and game-high seven points on three goals and four assists. Senior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) had three goals and three assists and sophomore Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) had a career-high five points on two goals and three assists. Senior Kayla Reese (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) added two goals and an assist and freshman Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) had a career-high four points on two goals and two assists. Senior Kerri Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Islip) had two goals and one assist and senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had a goal and an assist. Freshman Isabelle Palladino (Medford, N.Y./Patchogue-Medford) scored her first two collegiate goals, freshman Tatiana Moran (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) scored her first collegiate goal and sophomore Christina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) also scored. Senior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) recorded a goal and an assist and graduate student Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) dished out an assist. Senior Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) and freshman Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) each had a game-high three caused turnovers and senior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made one save in the first half with no goals allowed to earn the win. Sophomore Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made two saves in the second half.
UDC was led by Anna Schamens who had a team-high two points on a goal and an assist. Zuleima Ulloa-Santos made eight saves to take the loss.
Mercy wasted little time in scoring as Lopreato found the back of the net just under 50 seconds into the game to give the Mavericks a 1-0 lead. Keenan made it 2-0 at the 11:51 mark following an assist from Hansen. Bishop and Hansen netted back-to-back goals to give Mercy a 4-0 lead with seven minutes left in the opening quarter, leading to a UDC timeout. Following the timeout, Keenan scored two more goals and Grzelaczyk and Cummings scored to put Mercy up, 8-0, with 4:23 left in the quarter. Moussa and Palladino capped off the scoring in the quarter to give Mercy a 10-0 lead after one quarter.
Hansen gave the Mavericks an 11-0 lead with 10:46 left in the half and Cummings tallied a man-down goal to put Mercy up 12-0 with 6:14 remaining in the quarter. Moussa scored the final goal of the half, giving the Mavericks a 13-0 lead at halftime.
Schreck and Hansen opened the scoring in the third quarter to put Mercy up, 15-0, with 8:11 left in the quarter. Victoria Majano ended the shutout with a goal at the 5:25 mark to make it 15-1. Reese and Palladino closed out the quarter with two straight goals to put the Mavericks up 17-1 after three quarters.
Schreck and Moran recorded goals to begin the fourth quarter, giving Mercy a 19-1 lead at the 10:55 mark. Schamens answered with a goal for UDC with 7:39 left to make it 19-2. Reese capped off the scoring for the Mavericks at the 4:37 mark, off an assist from Bishop, to give Mercy a commanding 20-2 lead.
Mercy held a 32-8 edge in shots, a 15-10 edge in ground balls and 14-12 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 1st when they play at Bloomsburg at 4 p.m.
