BLOOMSBURG, Pa. (Apr. 1, 2022) – Despite a game-high-tying five points from senior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge), the No. 12 Mercy College women's lacrosse team dropped a 14-13 decision to Bloomsburg University on Friday afternoon at Steph Pettit Stadium.
The Mavericks (6-3) see their four-game winning streak come to an end, while the Huskies (7-3) snap a two-game losing streak.
Keenan had a team-high four goals with an assist and senior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) and graduate student Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) each had three goals and one assist. Seniors Kerri Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) and freshman Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) also scored. Seniors Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa), Alexandra Bigilin (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Kellenberg) and Hunter Savino (Holtsville, N.Y./Sachem East), junior Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) and freshman Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) each had a team-high two caused turnovers. Senior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made a game-high 10 saves to take the loss.
Bloomsburg was led by Abby Kalish who had a game-high five goals. Lauren Foley made six saves to earn the win.
The Huskies scored less than a minute into the action to take a 1-0 lead. A Kelsey Kilgallon goal at the 11:45 mark of the first quarter gave the hosts a 2-0 lead. Cummings got Mercy on the scoreboard, off an assist from Bishop, with 8:17 left in the quarter. Kalish scored just over a minute later to make it 3-1. Keenan found the back of the net for the first time with 4:35 on the clock to cut the deficit to 3-2. Maya Fulmer later gave the Huskies a 4-2 lead before Keenan scored again to make it 4-3 after one quarter of play.
Corace tied the game at 4-4 just over a minute into the second quarter. The two teams traded goals with Hansen scoring for the Mavericks to make it 5-5 with 11:20 left in the half. Bloomsburg netted back-to-back goals to take a 7-5 lead before Grzelaczyk scored a free position goal at the 6:03 mark to make it 7-6. An Amanda Stoll goal at the 2:55 mark gave the Huskies an 8-6 lead at halftime.
Bloomsburg scored the first two goals of the third quarter to take a 10-6 lead with 9:15 left in the quarter. Keenan ended the run with a goal to make it 10-7 with 8:18 on the clock. Madison Coyle gave the hosts an 11-7 lead with 2:24 on the clock, but Bishop tallied the final goal of the quarter to get Mercy to within three, 11-8.
Kilgallon scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to give the hosts a 12-8 lead. Keenan answered with her fourth goal of the day to make it 12-9 with 11:31 remaining. Kalish increased the lead back to four, 13-9, with 7:07 left after a Mercy yellow card. Bishop and Corace recorded back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to two, 13-11, with 3:43 remaining in the game. Kalish recorded her final goal of the game at the 2:10 mark to give the Huskies a 14-11 lead. Corace and Bishop followed with two straight goals again to get Mercy to within one, 14-13, with 1:22 on the clock. Bloomsburg won the ensuing draw control and held on for the win.
Bloomsburg held a 32-23 edge in shots and a 20-11 edge in draw controls. Mercy held an 18-15 edge in ground balls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 6th when they host West Chester at 4 p.m.
