DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 6, 2022) – Despite a team-high four goals from graduate student Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac), the No. 13 Mercy College women's lacrosse team dropped a 21-12 decision to No. 7 West Chester University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (6-4) have dropped back-to-back games for the first time since 2019 and the 21 goals allowed are the most surrendered since a 21-16 loss at Molloy on April 25, 2015. The Golden Rams (8-1) improve to 2-0 all-time against Mercy.
Corace had four goals and senior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) had three goals and one assist. Sophomore Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had a goal, two assists and two caused turnovers. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had a goal and two assists and senior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) had two goals. Senior Kerri Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Islip) had a goal and an assist and junior Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) had an assist with four ground balls. Senior Alexandra Bigilin (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had a team-high three caused turnovers and freshman Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) had a career-high and game-high 11 draw controls. Senior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made five saves in 35:54 minutes of action to take the loss. Freshman Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made one save in 24:06 minutes of action.
West Chester was led by Lindsay Monigle who had a game-high eight points on three goals and five assists. Jessica Gorr made 15 saves to earn the win.
Corace got Mercy on the scoreboard first at the 13:41 mark of the first quarter, off an assist from Rosenfeld, to make it 1-0. West Chester recorded back-to-back goals to take a 2-1 lead with 11 minutes on the clock. Corace netted her second goal of the day less than 15 seconds later, off an assist from Grzelaczyk, to tie the game at 2-2. Keenan gave Mercy a 3-2 lead with 7:45 on the clock after a pass from Cummings. The Golden Rams closed the quarter with six straight goals to take an 8-3 lead after one quarter of play.
Mercy continued to battle and scored the first three goals of the second quarter to cut the West Chester lead to 8-6 with 8:17 left in the half. Keenan netted back-to-back goals and Corace recorded her third goal to get the Mavericks back in the game. The Golden Rams responded back with two unanswered goals to make it 10-6 at the 5:19 mark. Cummings later made it 10-7 after a feed from Keenan, but a Keri Barnett goal gave the guests an 11-7 lead at halftime.
West Chester scored the first five goals of the third quarter to take a 16-7 lead with 4:52 left in the quarter. Bishop ended the run with her first goal of the day to make it 16-8. Monigle scored the final goal of the quarter to give the Golden Rams a 17-8 lead after three quarters.
The Golden Rams scored the first goal of the fourth quarter to increase the lead to 10, 18-8. Bishop, Rosenfeld and Corace followed with three straight goals to cut the deficit to seven, 18-11, with nine minutes left. West Chester netted the next two goals to build a 20-11 lead before Grzelaczyk scored to make it 20-12. Jordan Santana scored the Golden Rams last goal with 36 seconds left to give West Chester a 21-12 win.
Mercy held a 31-28 edge in shots, a 21-18 edge in ground balls and a 22-15 edge in draw controls.
