DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 10, 2022) – Powered by a combined nine goals from graduate student Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and senior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge), the No. 13 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned a 14-4 win over ECC foe D'Youville University on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (7-4, 2-0 ECC) snap a two-game losing streak, while the Saints (7-6, 1-2 ECC) fail to build off their win yesterday. The win is the 100th career win for 10th year Head Coach Dawn Sachs. Sachs is the winningest coach in program history and now has a career record of 100-55.
Keenan had five goals and one assist and Corace netted four goals. Sophomore Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) had two goals and an assist and sophomore Ryleigh Hostinsky (Point Pleasant Borough, N.J./Point Pleasant Borough) had two goals. Senior Kayla Reese (West Babylon, N.Y./West Babylon) added a goal and senior Kerri Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Islip) and freshman Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) each had two assists. Senior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) and sophomore Ally Schreck (Miller Place, N.Y./Miller Place) also dished out an assist and senior Alexandra Bigilin (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Kellenberg) had a team-high three caused turnovers. Senior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made nine saves in 54:55 minutes of action to earn the win. Sophomore Olivia Maute (Rockaway, N.J./Morris Hills) made one save in 5:05 minutes of action.
D'Youville was led by Marissa Malvaso who had a team-high two goals. Brinn Stworzydlak made a game-high 17 saves to take the loss.
The game remained scoreless until the 11:51 mark of the first quarter when Corace scored, off an assist from Cummings to make it 1-0. Malvaso would tie the game at 1-1 with her first goal of the day with 7:47 on the clock. Corace and Keenan recorded back-to-back goals to close out the quarter, giving Mercy a 3-1 lead after one quarter of play.
Keenan made it 4-1 at the 13:02 mark of the second quarter. Paige Cocina answered less than a minute later to make it 4-2. Corace, Rosenfeld and Keenan recorded three straight goals to put Mercy up 7-2 with 4:41 left in the quarter. Malvaso made it 7-3 before Keenan scored with eight seconds on the clock to give Mercy an 8-3 lead at halftime.
Corace and Rosenfeld scored the lone two goals in the third quarter to give Mercy a 10-3 lead after three quarters.
Keenan and Hostinsky scored less than two minutes into the fourth quarter to give the Mavericks a 12-3 lead. Hostinsky later netted her second goal of the day at the 11:23 mark to make it 13-3. Riley Riedel made it 13-4 with 5:08 on the clock. Reese put the finishing touches on the win with a goal at the 2:17 mark to give Mercy the 14-4 win.
Mercy held a 39-20 edge in shots, a 25-19 edge in ground balls and a 15-7 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, April 13th when they play at Molloy at 7 p.m.
