ROCKVILLE CENTRE, N.Y. (Apr. 13, 2022) – Powered by a career-high and game-high five goals from sophomore Kelly Rosenfeld (Massapequa, N.Y./Massapequa) and a game-high 12 saves from senior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's), the No. 13 Mercy College women's lacrosse team earned an 18-6 win over ECC foe Molloy College on Wednesday night at John A. Darcy Field.
The Mavericks (8-4, 3-0 ECC) have won two games in a row and defeat the Lions (7-7, 2-2 ECC) for the eighth straight time.
Rosenfeld had five goals and graduate student Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and senior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford) each had three goals. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y./Seaford) had two goals, an assist and a game-high-tying six draw controls and junior Erin Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Adelphi University) had two goals. Senior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) had a goal and two assists and sophomore Christina Lopreato (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and freshman Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) also scored. Senior Kerri Cummings (Islip, N.Y./Islip) had two assists and freshmen Leena Moussa (Wantagh, N.Y./Wantagh) and Lindsey Shimborske (Farmingdale, N.Y./Farmingdale) also dished out an assist. Senior Alexandra Bigilin (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) had a game-high-tying two caused turnovers and Garvalosa made 12 saves to earn the win.
Molloy was led by Alexa Amorison and Amanda Weber who each had three goals. Mary-Kate Sweeney made 10 saves to take the loss.
The Lions jumped out to a 1-0 lead just nine seconds into the game on a Weber goal. Rosenfeld evened the score at 1-1 with her first of the day less than a minute later after an assist from Grzelaczyk. Rosenfeld followed with her second goal to make it 2-1 with 11:27 left in the opening quarter. Grzelaczyk, Corace, Bishop and Rosenfeld closed the quarter with four straight goals to give Mercy a 6-1 lead after one quarter of play.
Molloy scored the first goal of the second quarter to make it 6-2 with 13:38 left in the half. Bishop netted her second goal of the game with 6:13 left in the quarter to make it 7-2. Weber later made it 7-3 before Lopreato and Keenan ended the quarter with goals to give Mercy a 9-3 lead at halftime.
Rosenfeld, Corace and Grzelaczyk tallied the first three goals of the third quarter to give Mercy a 12-3 lead with 2:30 on the clock. Molloy scored the next two goals to make it 12-5. However, Bishop found the back of the net for the third time as time expired to give the Mavericks a 13-5 lead heading into the fourth quarter.
Corace recorded her second woman-up goal of the game at the 12:05 mark to put Mercy up 14-5. Amorison scored the final Molloy goal with 9:58 on the clock. Rosenfeld followed with her final goal of the day with 9:07 remaining to make it 15-6. Erin Shimborske continued the onslaught with back-to-back goals to put the Mavericks ahead 17-6. Hansen capped off the scoring with her lone goal of the day, off an assist from Cummings, to give Mercy the 18-6 win.
Mercy held a 34-22 edge in shots and a 14-13 edge in draw controls. Molloy held a 16-11 edge in ground balls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, April 16th when they host Jefferson for Senior Day at 3 p.m.
