Game Preview: No. 13/14 Women's Lacrosse Hosts Franklin Pierce on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 4, 2022) – The No. 13/14 Mercy College women's lacrosse team hosts Franklin Pierce University on Saturday, March 5th at 11 a.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off a 10-9 loss to No. 3/4 Le Moyne on Wednesday. The Mavericks were led by senior Juliana Keenan who had a game-high-tying four goals. Senior Micayla Brady had five ground balls and two caused turnovers and senior Madeline Garvalosa had a game-high 10 saves.

·        On Monday, Brady was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Keenan was tabbed to the Honor Roll. On Tuesday, Brady was named IWLCA Division II Defensive Player of the Week.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Brady was selected Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 12-2 during the 2021 season, winning the ECC Regular Season Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 14 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and No. 13 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        Mercy is 31-9 in their last 40 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season. The Mavericks are 14-6 at home during that stretch.

·        Mercy has had seven straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last six seasons the tournament was held.

·        The Mavericks are facing Franklin Pierce for the first time.

·        Mercy looks to improve to 12-1 all-time in home openers

·        Head Coach Dawn Sachs is just six wins shy of 100 for her career. She currently holds a 94-52 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Keenan leads the Mavericks with 11 points on 10 goals and one assist. She also has two ground balls and three caused turnovers.

·        Senior Taylor Bishop is second on the team with seven points on four goals and a team-high-tying three assists. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk is third on the team with four points by way of three goals and one assist. Graduate student Briana Corace has three goals and is five goals shy of 100 for her career.

·        The defense is led by Brady who was named Second Team All-American by the IWLCA last season and was named Preseason First Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine. She recorded her 100th career caused turnover in the win over Lock Haven on February 24th and has a team-high eight ground balls and eight caused turnovers. Senior Hunter Savino has six ground balls and three caused turnovers and senior Alexandra Bigilin has five ground balls and three caused turnovers.

·        Garvalosa is 1-1 in goal with 15 saves, a .536 save percentage and 8.67 goals-against average.

Scouting the Ravens

·        Franklin Pierce was picked sixth in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 7-3 last season, falling in the NE10 Northeast Division Semifinal.

·        Leading the returners for the Ravens is senior Savannah Ernst who had a team-high 57 points on 49 goals and eight assists. Ernst was named Third Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine and was an IWLCA First Team All-Region selection. Graduate student Caroline Lounsbury ranked second on the team with 31 points on 22 goals and nine assists last season.

·        Seniors Morgan Baxendale and Megyn Ayotte also return after combining for 42 goals, 13 assists and 55 points last season.

·        Senior Jacklyn Keane returns on defense for the Ravens after ranking second on the team with 11 caused turnovers last season.

·        Junior Erin Blake returns in goal after going 4-1 with 36 saves, a .414 save percentage and 10.72 goals-against average.
