Game Preview: No. 12 Women's Lacrosse Plays at No. 9 Adelphi on Wednesday

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off an 18-7 win over Franklin Pierce in their home opener on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by seniors Kerri Cummings and Juliana Keenan who each had a team-high five points on three goals and two assists. Senior Micayla Brady had a game-high six caused turnovers and four ground balls.

·        On Monday, Brady was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the second straight week and Keenan and freshman Lindsey Shimborske were tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Brady was selected Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 12-2 during the 2021 season, winning the ECC Regular Season Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 12 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and No. 13 in the Nike/US Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        Mercy is 32-9 in their last 41 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season. The Mavericks are 15-6 at home during that stretch.

·        Mercy has had seven straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last six seasons the tournament was held.

·        The Mavericks are looking for their first-ever win over Adelphi. Mercy is 0-2 all-time against the Panthers.

·        Head Coach Dawn Sachs is just five wins shy of 100 for her career. She currently holds a 95-52 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Keenan leads the Mavericks with 16 points on 13 goals and three assists. She also has three ground balls and four caused turnovers. The senior has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice.

·        Senior Taylor Bishop is second on the team with nine points on six goals and three assists. Senior Kerri Cummings is third on the team with eight points by way of three goals and a team-high five assists. Graduate student Briana Corace has six goals and is two goals shy of 100 for her career.

·        The defense is led by Brady who was named Second Team All-American by the IWLCA last season and was named Preseason First Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine. She recorded her 100th career caused turnover in the win over Lock Haven on February 24th and has a team-high 12 ground balls and 14 caused turnovers. Senior Hunter Savino has seven ground balls and five caused turnovers and senior Alexandra Bigilin has six ground balls and six caused turnovers. Shimborske ranks second on the team with seven caused turnovers and 10 draw controls.

·        Senior Madeline Garvalosa is 2-1 in goal with 24 saves, a .545 save percentage and 8.35 goals-against average.

Scouting the Panthers

·        Adelphi is coming off a 23-3 win over Georgian Court in their season opener on February 23rd.

·        The Panthers were picked second in the NE10 Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 9-4 last season, losing in the NE10 Championship Game. Adelphi is currently ranked No. 9 in the IWLCA Poll and No. 14 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll. 

·        Adelphi was picked first in the NE10 poll in seven of the last eight NE10 preseason polls. The Panthers have won four NE10 championships and four national championships in that span and have made the NE10 championship game in 10 of the last 11 seasons.

·        The Panthers have won a Division II record nine National Championships.

·        Leading Adelphi is senior Christina McCabe who has a team-high seven points on five goals and two assists. Senior Emily Beier is second on the team with six points on a goal and a team-high five assists. Junior Danielle Marino has a goal and four assists and seniors Izzy Grant and Megan Keener and junior Kerrin Heuser all have four goals.

·        The Panthers are led in goal by senior Emma Lemanski who is 1-0 with three saves, a .750 save percentage and 1.33 goals against average in 45 minutes of action.

Mercy resumes action on Saturday, March 12th when they play at No. 21 Assumption at 4 p.m.
