GARDEN CITY, N.Y. (Mar. 9, 2022) – Despite a team-high four points from senior Taylor Bishop (West Milford, N.J./West Milford), the No. 12 Mercy College women's lacrosse team dropped an 11-6 decision to nine-time National Champion No. 9 Adelphi University on Wednesday afternoon at Motamed Field.
The Mavericks (2-2) fall to .500 on the year, while the Panthers (2-0) remain unbeaten on the year. The five-goal loss is the smallest margin of defeat to the perennial national power in three all-time meetings.
Bishop had a game-high-tying three goals with one assist and senior Juliana Keenan (Bethpage, N.Y./Plainedge) had two goals. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk (Seaford, N.Y/Seaford) also scored and graduate student Briana Corace (Mahopac, N.Y./Mahopac) and freshman Leah Hansen (Greenlawn, N.Y./Harborfields) dished out an assist. Senior Micayla Brady (Massapequa Park, N.Y./Massapequa) had a game-high eight draw controls with a team-high two caused turnovers. Senior Madeline Garvalosa (Seaford, N.Y./St. Anthony's) made four saves in goal to take the loss.
Adelphi was led by Christina McCabe who had a game-high five points on two goals and three assists. Emma Lemanski made a game-high nine saves to earn the win.
The game remained scoreless until the 5:35 mark of the first quarter when Grzelaczyk found the back of net, off a pass from Corace, to give Mercy a 1-0 lead. Adelphi evened the score at 1-1 after an Izzy Grant goal with 3:47 on the clock. The Panthers scored two more goals in the 1:43 of the first quarter to take a 3-1 lead after one quarter.
Grant scored another goal at the 12:47 mark of the second quarter to give the hosts a 4-1 lead. Bishop answered with a woman-up goal just over two minutes later to make it 4-2. Grant scored the final goal of the quarter with 3:23 on the clock to give Adelphi a 5-2 lead at halftime.
The Panthers scored all three goals in the third quarter to increase their lead to 8-2 after three quarters.
Danielle Marino opened the scoring less than a minute into the fourth quarter to put the Panthers up 9-2. Bishop followed with a free position goal to make it 9-3 with 12:43 on the clock. McCabe netted her second goal of the game at the 9:41 mark to give Adelphi a 10-3 lead. Bishop recorded her third goal of the game on a free position shot with 7:45 left to get Mercy within six, 10-4. Marino tallied the final Adelphi goal of the game with 5:38 remaining to give the hosts an 11-4 advantage. Keenan scored two goals in the final 2:19 to make it 11-6, but the deficit proved too much to overcome and Adelphi came away with the win.
Adelphi held a 26-22 edge in shots and a 25-10 edge in ground balls. Mercy held a 16-4 edge in draw controls.
Head Coach Dawn Sachs and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday, March 12th when they play at No. 21 Assumption at 4 p.m.
