Game Preview: No. 13 Women's Lacrosse Plays at Molloy on Wednesday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 12, 2022) – The No. 13 Mercy College women's lacrosse team plays at ECC foe Molloy College on Wednesday, April 13th at 7 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off a 14-4 win over D'Youville on Sunday. The Mavericks were led by senior Juliana Keenan who had a game-high six points on five goals and one assist. Keenan was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday.

·        On March 28th, freshman Leah Hansen was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the first time.

·        On March 21st, senior Madeline Garvalosa was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and senior Taylor Bishop was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        On March 14th, freshman Lindsey Shimborske was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Keenan and senior Micayla Brady were named to the Honor Roll.

·        Brady has been named ECC Defensive Player of the Week twice and has been named IWLCA Division II Defensive Player of the Week once. Keenan has been named to the ECC Honor Roll three times and Shimborske has been named to the Honor Roll once.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Brady was selected Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 12-2 during the 2021 season, winning the ECC Regular Season Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 13 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and No. 17 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        Mercy is 37-12 in their last 49 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·        Mercy has had seven straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last six seasons the tournament was held.

·        The Mavericks are 7-6 all-time against Molloy, winning the last seven matchups.

·        Head Coach Dawn Sachs recorded her 100th career win against D'Youville on Sunday. She currently holds a 100-55 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Keenan leads the Mavericks with 49 points on a team-high 38 goals with 11 assists. She also has eight ground balls and seven caused turnovers. The senior has been named to the ECC Honor Roll four times.

·        Senior Taylor Bishop is second on the team with 32 points on 23 goals and nine assists. Senior Kerri Cummings is fourth on the team with 22 points by way of eight goals and a team-high 14 assists. Graduate student Briana Corace has 26 goals and three assists and recorded her 100th career goal in Mercy's win over Assumption on March 13th. She became the sixth Maverick in program history to record 100 goals. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk is fifth on the team with 20 points on 13 goals and seven assists and Hansen has 19 points on nine goals and 10 assists.

·        The defense is led by Brady who was named Second Team All-American by the IWLCA last season and was named Preseason First Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine. She recorded her 100th career caused turnover in the win over Lock Haven on February 24th and has 23 ground balls, 32 draw controls and 28 caused turnovers. She now has a school-record 122 career caused turnovers, surpassing the previous school record of 116 set by Talia Stagnitta in 2020. Senior Hunter Savino has 19 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers and senior Alexandra Bigilin has 21 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers. Shimborske is second on the team with 23 caused turnovers and leads the team with 24 ground balls and 36 draw controls.

·        Senior Madeline Garvalosa is 7-4 in goal with 80 saves, a .506 save percentage and 8.75 goals-against average.

Scouting the Lions

·        Molloy is coming off a 13-11 loss to Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday.

·        The Lions were picked third in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 4-7 last season.

·        Molloy is led by junior Amanda Weber who has a team-high 48 points on a team-high 41 goals with seven assists. One-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week senior Abbie Bellport has 31 points on 25 goals and six assists.

·        Senior Megan Schiaffo has a team-high 18 assists with six goals and two-time ECC Rookie of the Week freshman Alexa Amorison has 11 goals and 16 assists.

·        One-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week sophomore Ryan Smith has a team-high 32 caused turnovers and freshman Carly Howell has a team-high 35 ground balls.

·        Junior Joanna Mauceri has a team-high 46 draw controls and sophomore Mary-Kate Sweeney is 6-6 in goal with 79 saves, a .364 save percentage and 12.25 goals-against average.

Mercy resumes action on Saturday, April 16th when they host Jefferson at 3 p.m.
