Game Preview: No. 16 Women's Lacrosse Plays at No. 19 Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off a 13-10 win over Jefferson on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by senior Jules Keenan who had a team-high four goals and by senior Madeline Garvalosa who had a game-high 13 saves.

·        On Monday, Garvalosa was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the second time and freshman Lindsey Shimborske was tabbed ECC Rookie of the Week for the second time. Senior Taylor Bishop was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the second time.

·        Last week, Keenan was named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        On March 28th, freshman Leah Hansen was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the first time.

·        On March 21st, Garvalosa was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Bishop was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        On March 14th, Shimborske was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Keenan and senior Micayla Brady were named to the Honor Roll.

·        Brady has been named ECC Defensive Player of the Week twice and has been named IWLCA Division II Defensive Player of the Week once. Keenan has been named to the ECC Honor Roll four times and Shimborske has been named to the Honor Roll once.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Brady was selected Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 12-2 during the 2021 season, winning the ECC Regular Season Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 16 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and No. 18 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        The Mavericks are ranked fifth in the first NCAA Regional Rankings announced Wednesday. The top four teams from the East Region qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

·        Mercy is 39-12 in their last 51 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·        Mercy has had seven straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last six seasons the tournament was held.

·        The Mavericks are 7-3 all-time against the Redhawks. Mercy fell 10-9 in the ECC Championship Game to Roberts Wesleyan in the teams' last meeting last year.

·        Head Coach Dawn Sachs recorded her 100th career win against D'Youville on April 10th. She currently holds a 102-55 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Keenan leads the Mavericks with 55 points on a team-high 43 goals with 12 assists. She also has 11 ground balls and eight caused turnovers. The senior has been named to the ECC Honor Roll four times.

·        Senior Taylor Bishop is second on the team with 39 points on 29 goals and 10 assists. She is one point shy of 100 for her career. Senior Kerri Cummings is fourth on the team with 26 points by way of nine goals and a team-high 17 assists. Graduate student Briana Corace has 30 goals and three assists and recorded her 100th career goal in Mercy's win over Assumption on March 13th. She became the sixth Maverick in program history to record 100 goals. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk is fourth on the team with 26 points on 17 goals and nine assists and Hansen has 23 points on 11 goals and 12 assists.

·        The defense is led by Brady who was named Second Team All-American by the IWLCA last season and was named Preseason First Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine. She recorded her 100th career caused turnover in the win over Lock Haven on February 24th and has 23 ground balls, 32 draw controls and 28 caused turnovers. She now has a school-record 122 career caused turnovers, surpassing the previous school record of 116 set by Talia Stagnitta in 2020. Senior Hunter Savino has 20 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers and senior Alexandra Bigilin has 25 ground balls and 20 caused turnovers. Shimborske is second on the team with 26 caused turnovers and leads the team with 27 ground balls and 42 draw controls.

·        Garvalosa is 9-4 in goal with 105 saves, a .528 save percentage and 8.62 goals-against average.

Scouting the Redhawks

·        Roberts Wesleyan is coming off an 18-9 win over D'Youville on Saturday.

·        The Redhawks were picked second in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 14-2 last season. Roberts Wesleyan won their first-ever ECC Championship and also made their first appearance in the NCAA Championship. In addition, the Redhawks advanced to the national semifinals, becoming the first ECC squad to do so since 2015.

·        Roberts Wesleyan is ranked No. 19 in the ILWomen/IWLCA Poll and No. 20 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        The Redhawks are led offensively by ECC Preseason Offensive Player of the Year and one-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week senior Lindsey Brinkel who has 77 points on 29 goals and a team-high 48 assists. Three-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week senior Madison Bell has a team-high 85 points on 56 goals and 29 assists and senior Alexis Grant has 32 goals, eight assists and 20 caused turnovers.

·        Two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week sophomore Madelyn Robinson has a team-high 35 caused turnovers with 23 ground balls and junior Caitlin Tucker has a team-high 30 ground balls. Sophomore Sophia Podszebka has a team-high 84 draw controls with 12 caused turnovers.

·        Senior Natalie Arieno is 8-4 in goal with 94 saves, a .456 save percentage and 9.95 goals-against average.

Mercy resumes action on Tuesday, April 26th when they host Bridgeport at 4 p.m.
