DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 27, 2022) – Despite a game-high-tying three RBI from graduate student Robert Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Westchester CC), the Mercy College baseball team dropped a 15-7 decision to regionally-ranked Pace University on Wednesday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (17-20-1) see their two-game winning streak come to an end, while the Setters (19-16) earn a split of the season series with the win.
Wootten went 1-for-4 with three RBI and senior James Mattutat (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) went 1-for-5 with two RBI. Freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 2-for-4 with three runs and senior James Dieguez (Westbury, N.Y./Kellenberg Memorial) went 2-for-3. Junior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y./Jamesville Dewitt) went 1-for-4 with two runs and senior Ivan Martinez Jr. (Bronx, N.Y./Towson University) went 1-for-3 with a run. Freshman Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) went 1-for-2 and junior Ryan Gonzalez (Howell, N.J./Neumann University) went 1-for-1. Sophomore Luis Ruiz (Weehawken, N.J./High Tech) allowed one earned run in 1.2 innings to take the loss.
Pace was led by Mitch McCabe who went 3-for-4 with four runs, three RBI and a home run. Patrick Gleason allowed two earned runs in seven innings to earn the win.
Pace scored three runs in the first inning, three more in the second and two runs in third to take an 8-0 lead. Mercy responded with four runs in the bottom of the third to cut the deficit to 8-4. Freshman Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) reached on an error to lead off the inning and scored after a throwing error by the third baseman following a Martinez Jr. single to make it 8-1. Caballero doubled and Giblin walked to load the bases before Wootten hit a two-run double down the right field line to make it 8-3. Mattutat brought in the final run of the inning on a groundout to second.
The Setters tacked on five more runs in the fifth to take a 13-4 lead. Mercy got a run back in the fifth to make it 13-5. Caballero doubled and later scored on a Wootten RBI groundout to second.
Pace scored a run in the seventh and another in the ninth to make it 15-5. Mercy scored two runs in the bottom of the ninth to cut the deficit to 15-7. Mattutat brought home the first run of the inning on a groundout to first and Giblin scored following an error by the third baseman to make it 15-7. A groundout to the pitcher ended the game with runners on second and third.
Mercy had 10 hits and five errors and Pace had 17 hits and four errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Friday, April 29th when they host D'Youville at 4 p.m.
