Game Preview: No. 15 Women's Lacrosse Plays at STAC on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 28, 2022) – The No. 15 Mercy College women's lacrosse team plays at St. Thomas Aquinas College on Saturday, April 30th at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off a 19-4 win over Bridgeport on Tuesday. The Mavericks were led by graduate student Briana Corace who had a career-high-tying five goals.

·        On Monday, senior Taylor Bishop was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week, senior Madeline Garvalosa was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week for the third time and freshman Lindsey Shimborske was named Rookie of the Week for the third time.

·        Last week, Garvalosa was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Shimborske was tabbed ECC Rookie of the Week. Bishop was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the second time.

·        On April 11th, senior Juliana Keenan was named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        On March 28th, freshman Leah Hansen was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the first time.

·        On March 21st, Garvalosa was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Bishop was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        On March 14th, Shimborske was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Keenan and senior Micayla Brady were named to the Honor Roll.

·        Brady has been named ECC Defensive Player of the Week twice and has been named IWLCA Division II Defensive Player of the Week once. Keenan has been named to the ECC Honor Roll four times and Shimborske has been named to the Honor Roll once.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Brady was selected Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 12-2 during the 2021 season, winning the ECC Regular Season Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 15 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and No. 19 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        The Mavericks are ranked fifth in the second NCAA Regional Rankings announced Wednesday. The top four teams from the East Region qualify for the NCAA Tournament.

·        Mercy is 41-12 in their last 53 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·        Mercy has had eight straight winning seasons and have earned their sixth straight ECC Tournament appearance this year.

·        The Mavericks are 9-4 all-time against STAC, having won the last six meetings.

·        Head Coach Dawn Sachs recorded her 100th career win against D'Youville on April 10th. She currently holds a 104-55 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Keenan leads the Mavericks with 59 points on a team-high 47 goals with 12 assists. She also has 13 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. The senior has been named to the ECC Honor Roll four times and recorded her 100th career draw control at Roberts Wesleyan on April 23rd.

·        Senior Taylor Bishop is second on the team with 45 points on 35 goals and 10 assists. She recorded her 100th career point in the win over Roberts Wesleyan on April 23rd. Senior Kerri Cummings is fourth on the team with 32 points by way of 11 goals and a team-high 21 assists. Graduate student Briana Corace has 36 goals and four assists and recorded her 100th career goal in Mercy's win over Assumption on March 13th. She became the sixth Maverick in program history to record 100 goals. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk is fourth on the team with 32 points on 20 goals and 12 assists and Hansen has 28 points on 14 goals and 14 assists.

·        The defense is led by Brady who was named Second Team All-American by the IWLCA last season and was named Preseason First Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine. She recorded her 100th career caused turnover in the win over Lock Haven on February 24th and has 23 ground balls, 32 draw controls and 28 caused turnovers. She now has a school-record 122 career caused turnovers, surpassing the previous school record of 116 set by Talia Stagnitta in 2020. Senior Hunter Savino has 20 ground balls and 15 caused turnovers and senior Alexandra Bigilin has 25 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers. Shimborske has a team-high 51 draw controls, 29 ground balls and 29 caused turnovers.

·        Garvalosa is 11-4 in goal with 118 saves, a .524 save percentage and 8.62 goals-against average. She recorded her 200th career save at Roberts Wesleyan on April 23rd.

Scouting the Spartans

·        STAC is coming off a 22-11 loss at Molloy on Saturday.

·        The Spartans were picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 4-5 last season.

·        With a win Saturday, STAC would clinch the fourth and final ECC Championship spot.

·        STAC is led by two-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week senior Danielle Cajou who has a team-high 61 points on 34 goals and a team-high 27 assists. She also has a team-high 77 draw controls with 29 ground balls. Senior Leanna Iobbi has a team-high 43 goals with seven assists, 56 draw controls and 20 ground balls.

·        Sophomore Micaela Ross has 46 points on 37 goals and nine assists and sophomore Hailey Galison has a team-high 46 ground balls. Senior Casey Hannon and sophomore Julia Reggio both have a team-high 10 caused turnovers.

·        One-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week junior Colleen Stevens is 4-8 in goal with 114 saves, a .354 save percentage and 17.33 goals-against average.
