Game Preview: No. 13 Women's Lacrosse Hosts No. 7 West Chester on Wednesday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Apr. 5, 2022) – The No. 13 Mercy College women's lacrosse team hosts No. 7 West Chester University on Wednesday, April 6th at 4 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off a 14-13 loss to Bloomsburg on Friday. The Mavericks were led by senior Juliana Keenan who had a team-high five points on four goals and one assist.

·        Last Monday, freshman Leah Hansen was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the first time.

·        On March 21st, senior Madeline Garvalosa was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and senior Taylor Bishop was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        On March 14th, freshman Lindsey Shimborske was named ECC Rookie of the Week and senior Juliana Keenan and senior Micayla Brady were named to the Honor Roll.

·        Brady has been named ECC Defensive Player of the Week twice and has been named IWLCA Division II Defensive Player of the Week once. Keenan has been named to the ECC Honor Roll three times and Shimborske has been named to the Honor Roll once.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Brady was selected Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 12-2 during the 2021 season, winning the ECC Regular Season Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 13 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and No. 14 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        Mercy is 36-11 in their last 47 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season. The Mavericks are 18-6 at home during that stretch.

·        Mercy has had seven straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in each of the last six seasons the tournament was held.

·        The Mavericks are 0-1 all-time against West Chester. The two teams last met on April 2, 2019 with West Chester earning a 9-8 win.

·        Head Coach Dawn Sachs is just one win shy of 100 for her career. She currently holds a 99-54 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Keenan leads the Mavericks with 39 points on a team-high 30 goals with nine assists. She also has seven ground balls and six caused turnovers. The senior has been named to the ECC Honor Roll three times.

·        Senior Taylor Bishop is second on the team with 29 points on 21 goals and eight assists. Senior Kerri Cummings is fourth on the team with 18 points by way of seven goals and a team-high 11 assists. Graduate student Briana Corace has 18 goals and three assists and recorded her 100th career goal in Mercy's win over Assumption on March 13th. She became the sixth Maverick in program history to record 100 goals. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk is fifth on the team with 17 points on 12 goals and five assists and Hansen also has 17 points on nine goals and eight assists.

·        The defense is led by Brady who was named Second Team All-American by the IWLCA last season and was named Preseason First Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine. She recorded her 100th career caused turnover in the win over Lock Haven on February 24th and has a team-high 23 ground balls, 32 draw controls and 28 caused turnovers. She now has a school-record 122 career caused turnovers, surpassing the previous school record of 116 set by Talia Stagnitta in 2020. Senior Hunter Savino has 16 ground balls and 12 caused turnovers and senior Alexandra Bigilin has 16 ground balls and nine caused turnovers. Shimborske ranks second on the team with 22 caused turnovers and 22 ground balls and is third with 21 draw controls.

·        Senior Madeline Garvalosa is 6-3 in goal with 66 saves, a .524 save percentage and 8.11 goals-against average.

Scouting the Golden Rams

·        West Chester is coming off a 15-13 win at Kutztown on Saturday for their third straight win.

·        The Golden Rams were picked first in the PSAC East Division Preseason Coaches' Poll after going 13-1 in 2020, advancing to the NCAA Tournament.

·        West Chester is the three-time defending PSAC champions having won the PSAC Tournament in 2018, 2019 and 2021.

·        The Golden Rams have won a record 24 PSAC championships since 1983.

·        West Chester has won two National Championships since 2002 and has made the NCAA Tournament the last three years it has been held.

·        The Golden Rams are led by Lindsay Monigle who has a team-high 44 points on 15 goals and a team-high 29 assists. Keri Barnett has a team-high 29 goals with three assists and Hannah Stanislawczyk has 28 goals and one assist.

·        Helen Kreschollek has 21 goals and one assist and Grace Frasso has a team-high 38 draw controls.

·        Julia Rossi has a team-high 17 caused turnovers and Barnett has a team-high 20 ground balls.

·        Amber Weedon is 4-1 in goal with 40 saves, a .494 save percentage and 8.56 goals-against average and Jessica Gorr is 3-0 with 20 saves, a .476 save percentage and 7.43 goals-against average.
