Women's Lacrosse NCAA Tournament Preview

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 11, 2022) – The No. 4 seed Mercy College women's lacrosse team opens play in the NCAA Tournament at No. 1 seed Stonehill College in a First Round matchup on Friday, May 13th at 11 a.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·        Mercy is coming off a 19-12 win over Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday to win their second ECC Championship. The Mavericks were led by senior Juliana Keenan who had a team-high eight points on five goals and three assists.

·        The Mavericks have earned their third straight NCAA Tournament berth and fourth overall.

·        Mercy is looking to win their first-ever NCAA Tournament game.

·        The Mavericks are facing Stonehill for the first time in program history.

·        Mercy dropped a 10-9 decision to Le Moyne on March 2nd and an 11-6 decision to Adelphi on March 9th. Both games were played on the road.

·        Last week, Keenan was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week and senior Madeline Garvalosa was tabbed ECC Defensive Player of the Week. Freshman Lindsey Shimborske was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        On April 25th, senior Taylor Bishop was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week, Garvalosa was tabbed Defensive Player of the Week for the third time and freshman Lindsey Shimborske was named Rookie of the Week for the third time.

·        On April 18th, Garvalosa was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Shimborske was tabbed ECC Rookie of the Week. Bishop was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the second time.

·        On April 11th, Keenan was named to the ECC Honor Roll.

·        On March 28th, freshman Leah Hansen was named to the ECC Honor Roll for the first time.

·        On March 21st, Garvalosa was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week and Bishop was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·        On March 14th, Shimborske was named ECC Rookie of the Week and Keenan and senior Micayla Brady were named to the Honor Roll.

·        Brady has been named ECC Defensive Player of the Week twice and has been named IWLCA Division II Defensive Player of the Week once. Keenan has been named to the ECC Honor Roll four times and Shimborske has been named to the Honor Roll once.

·        Mercy was picked to finish 1st in the ECC Preseason Poll and Brady was selected Preseason Defensive Player of the Year. The Mavericks went 12-2 during the 2021 season, winning the ECC Regular Season Championship and earning their second straight NCAA Tournament berth.

·        Mercy is currently ranked No. 14 in the IWLCA Coaches Poll and No. 13 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine Poll.

·        Mercy won their third straight ECC Regular Season Championship and second ECC Tournament Championship.

·        Mercy is 44-12 in their last 56 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·        Mercy has had eight straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in six straight years.

·        The Mavericks are 0-3 all-time against Adelphi and Le Moyne. Mercy faced Le Moyne in the First Round of the NCAA Tournament in 2019, falling 17-7, at Le Moyne.

·        Head Coach Dawn Sachs recorded her 100th career win against D'Youville on April 10th. She currently holds a 107-55 record in 10 seasons as head coach.

·        Brady was named ECC Defender of the Year, Garvalosa was named Goalkeeper of the Year and freshman Lindsey Shimborske was named Rookie of the Year. Head Coach Dawn Sachs was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time.

·        Brady, Garvalosa, Shimborske, Keenan, Bishop and Kelly Rosenfeld were named First Team All-ECC. Briana Corace, Kerri Cummings, Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk, Alexandra Bigilin, Erin Shimborske and Christina Lopreato were named Second Team All-ECC.

·        Keenan leads the Mavericks with 79 points on a team-high 61 goals with 18 assists. She also has 19 ground balls and 16 caused turnovers. The senior has been named to the ECC Honor Roll four times and recorded her 100th career point against STAC on Saturday.

·        Senior Taylor Bishop is second on the team with 54 points on 43 goals and 11 assists. She recorded her 100th career point in the win over Roberts Wesleyan on April 23rd. Senior Kerri Cummings is tied for fourth on the team with 43 points by way of 16 goals and a team-high 27 assists. Graduate student Briana Corace has 46 goals and six assists and recorded her 100th career goal in Mercy's win over Assumption on March 13th. She became the sixth Maverick in program history to record 100 goals. Senior Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk is fifth on the team with 42 points on 26 goals and 16 assists and Hansen has 33 points on 17 goals and 16 assists. Rosenfeld also has 33 points on 18 goals and 15 assists.

·        The defense is led by Brady who was named Second Team All-American by the IWLCA last season and was named Preseason First Team All-American by USA Lacrosse Magazine. She recorded her 100th career caused turnover in the win over Lock Haven on February 24th and has 29 ground balls, 33 draw controls and 32 caused turnovers. She now has a school-record 126 career caused turnovers, surpassing the previous school record of 116 set by Talia Stagnitta in 2020. Senior Hunter Savino has 25 ground balls and 17 caused turnovers and senior Alexandra Bigilin has 33 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers. Shimborske has a team-high 71 draw controls, 43 ground balls and 37 caused turnovers.

·        Garvalosa is 14-4 in goal with 149 saves, a .528 save percentage and 8.73 goals-against average. She recorded her 200th career save at Roberts Wesleyan on April 23rd.

Scouting the Skyhawks

·        Stonehill is coming off a 13-12 overtime win over Le Moyne to win the NE10 Championship on Sunday. The Skyhawks enter the Tournament on an 11-game winning streak.

·        The Skyhawks won their conference-record tenth NE10 Tournament Championship and its first since winning the last of a record nine-straight titles in 2008.

·        Stonehill is making their ninth appearance in the NCAA Tournament and first since 2015.

·        The Skyhawks are hosting an NCAA Tournament game for the first time since capturing its first of two national championships in 2003.

·        Stonehill has won two national championships (2003 & 2005).

·        The Skyhawks are ranked No. 5 nationally in the IWLCA poll and No. 7 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll.

·        Stonehill is led by NE10 Attack of the Year junior Lydia Rudden who had a team-high 109 points on 41 goals and a team-high 68 assists. She also had 31 ground balls and 13 caused turnovers. Senior Emma Sullivan was named NE10 Midfielder of the Year after ranking second on the team with 84 points on a team-high 66 goals with 18 assists. She also had a team-high 131 draw controls, 71 ground balls and 46 caused turnovers.

·        Junior Victoria Butler was named First Team All-NE10 after recording 15 goals, 18 points, 46 ground balls, 79 draw controls and 24 caused turnovers. Junior Kendall Fressle was tabbed Second Team All-NE10 after netting 62 points on 50 goals and 12 assists.

·        Freshman goalkeeper Sarah Faley was named Third Team All-NE10 after going 16-1 this season with 149 saves, a .437 save percentage and 10.88 goals-against average.

Scouting the Panthers

·        Adelphi is coming off a 9-8 loss to Le Moyne in the NE10 Semifinals on Saturday.

·        The Panthers have won nine national championships with their last coming in 2019.

·        Adelphi is making their 16th appearance in the NCAA Tournament.

·        The Panthers only two losses this season have come against Le Moyne and Stonehill.

·        Adelphi is ranked No. 7 nationally in the IWLCA poll and No. 8 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll.

·        The Panthers are led by graduate student Kailey Broderick who was named NE10 Defensive Player of the Year. She ranks second on the team with 29 caused turnovers and has a team-high 43 ground balls. First Team All-NE10 selection senior Christina McCabe leads Adelphi with 73 points on a team-high 43 goals to go with 30 assists.

·        Senior Emily Beier is second on the team with 63 points by way of 30 goals and a team-high 33 assists. Second Team All-NE10 selection senior Izzy Grant has 44 points on 39 goals and five assists.

·        Second team All-NE10 recipient senior Alexandra Beebe has a team-high 30 caused turnovers and Grant has a team-high 72 draw controls.

·        Second Team All-NE10 selection senior Emma Lemanski is 16-2 in goal with a .464 save percentage, 85 saves and a 5.94 goals-against average in 18 starts.

Scouting the Dolphins

·        Le Moyne is coming off a 13-12 overtime loss to Stonehill in the NE10 Championship Game.

·        The Dolphins are looking for their second national championship and first since 2018.

·        Le Moyne is making their 12th NCAA Tournament appearance and ninth in 12 years.

·        The Dolphins are ranked No. 9 nationally in the IWLCA poll and No. 10 in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll.

·        Le Moyne is led by First Team All-NE10 selection senior Jessica Meneilly who has a team-high 65 points on a team-high 61 goals with four assists. Junior Gemma Addonizio is second on the team with 61 points on 31 goals and a team-high 30 assists.

·        Senior Sydney Meagher was named First Team All-NE10 and is third on the team with 56 points on 39 goals and 17 assists.

·        Sophomore Lilly Locastro leads the Dolphins with 26 caused turnovers and First Team All-NE10 selection senior Taylor Reich has a team-high 53 ground balls and is second with 22 caused turnovers.

·        Second Team All-NE10 selection senior Erin McMullen has a team-high 63 draw controls and has 31 goals and 11 assists. Junior Paige Crandall is 15-5 in goal with 122 saves, a .425 save percentage and 9.75 goals-against average.
