DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 8, 2022) – Powered by a game-high and career-high six RBI from senior James Mattutat (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman), the Mercy College baseball team earned a 14-3 win over ECC foe Queens College on Sunday afternoon at Mercy Field.
The Mavericks (21-22-1, 14-6 ECC) snap a two-game losing streak and move into a tie for second in the ECC standings with the Knights (23-15, 14-6 ECC) with one game to play. Mercy also ties the school record for most ECC wins in a season.
Mattutat went 4-for-6 with two runs and six RBI. Sophomore Jared Hernandez (Moca, P.R./Friends University) went 2-for-5 with three RBI and freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) went 4-for-5 with two runs and an RBI. Junior Justin Glennerster (Staten Island, N.Y./St. Joseph by the Sea) went 2-for-5 with two RBI and junior Nolan Giblin (Syracuse, N.Y/Jamesville Dewitt) went 3-for-6 with three runs and an RBI. Graduate student Robert Wootten (Ardsley, N.Y./Westchester CC) went 2-for-5 with two runs and freshman Frankie Asaro (East Williston, N.Y./Wheatley) went 2-for-4. Freshman Nathan Rodriguez (Hamilton, N.J./Hamilton West) went 1-for-3 and junior Kevin Seckler (Beacon, N.Y./Our Lady of Lourdes) pitched six innings with two earned runs allowed and six strikeouts to earn his fifth win of the season. Freshman Matthew Manzoeillo (Beacon, N.Y./Beacon) and sophomore Joshua Alvarado (Yonkers, N.Y./Saunders) combined to toss three shutout innings of relief.
Queens was led by Marc Cisco who went 3-for-5 with an RBI. Danny Gargano allowed seven runs in 0.2 innings to take the loss.
After the Knights took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first, Mercy exploded for seven runs in the bottom of the first to take a 7-1 lead. Hernandez, Caballero and Giblin recorded three straight singles to load the bases with no outs. After a popup, Glennerster singled to center field, scoring Hernandez to make it 1-1. Mattutat followed with a two-run double down the left field line to make it 3-1. Glennerster later scored on a passed ball to make it 4-1. Hernandez recorded his second hit of the inning, a single to right field, that scored two runs to give Mercy a 6-1 lead. Caballero doubled home the final run of the inning to make it 7-1.
Queens got two runs back in the top of the third on three hits to cut Mercy's lead to 7-3. The score remained 7-3 until the fourth inning when Mercy scored three runs to take a 10-3 lead. Caballero led off the inning with a triple and scored on a Giblin double to make it 8-3. Mattutat later hit a two-run triple to right center to give Mercy a 10-3 lead.
Mercy tacked on four more runs in the seventh inning to increase the lead to 14-3. Glennerster singled home the first run of the inning to make it 11-3 and Mattutat delivered another clutch two-run double to give the Mavericks a 13-3 lead. Hernandez plated the final run on a bases-loaded walk.
The combination of Manzoeillo and Alvarado held the Knights scoreless in the eighth and ninth innings to give Mercy the win.
Mercy had 20 hits and three errors and Queens had nine hits and no errors.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action tomorrow when they play at Queens at 3:30 p.m.
