Fernandes, Holland and Hanken Tjostheim Named United Soccer Coaches First Team All-East Region

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Dec. 5, 2023) – Mercy University men's soccer senior Carlos Fernandes (Lisbon, Portugal/Spring Hill College), junior Julian Holland (Tokyo, Japan/Iowa Western CC), and sophomore Johannes Hanken Tjostheim (Aalesund, Norway/Spring Hill College) have been named United Soccer Coaches First Team All-East Region, as announced by the organization earlier today.

Fernandes is named All-Region for the first time after being named First Team All-ECC. The senior was named to the ECC Honor Roll three times after starting 17 games with four goals, six assists and 14 points. He ranked second on the team in points and goals and led the team in assists. The midfielder had a season-high four points on two goals in the win over D'Youville on September 16th. The senior also had a season-high three assists in the win over Saint Rose on September 2nd and scored the game-winning goal in the win over Southern Connecticut State on September 9th.

Holland is named First Team All-Region by the United Soccer Coaches after being named First Team All-Region by the D2CCA. The ECC Defensive Player of the Year and First Team All-ECC selection was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week twice after starting all 18 games with three goals, three assists and nine points. Holland helped lead a Mercy backline that allowed just 21 goals in 18 games. The junior had a season-high two goals in the win over Roberts Wesleyan on September 30th. The defender also scored a goal against Wilmington and had an assist against Queens, Molloy and Daemen.

Hanken Tjostheim is tabbed First Team All-Region by the United Soccer Coaches after being named Second Team All-Region by the D2CCA. The sophomore was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week three times and played in 16 games with 14 starts, recording a team-high 13 goals and 30 points. Hanken Tjostheim tied for the ECC lead in goals and was third in points. The forward also had a team-high four game-winning goals and had a season-high three goals in the win at Roberts Wesleyan on September 30th. The sophomore also had two goals and an assist in the win over Saint Rose and had two goals in the win over Millersville on October 4th.
