Game Preview: No. 12/18 Women's Lacrosse Hosts RV Roberts Wesleyan in ECC Opener on Saturday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (Mar. 22, 2023) – The No. 12/18 Mercy College women's lacrosse team hosts RV Roberts Wesleyan University in their ECC opener on Saturday, March 25th at 11 a.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off an 18-15 loss at No. 4 Tampa on Saturday. The Mavericks were led by sophomore Leena Moussa who had a team-high four goals.

·         Graduate student Jaclyn Grzelaczyk was named to the ECC Honor Roll on Monday.

·         Sophomore Lindsey Shimborske was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll last week.

·         Shimborske was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on March 6th for the third straight week and graduate student Micayla Brady was tabbed to the Honor Roll. Sophomore Leena Moussa has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and graduate student Emma Rippon was tabbed to the Honor Roll on February 20th.

·         Moussa has a team-high 21 goals and 22 points on the year with one assist and three draw controls. Graduate student Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk is second on the team with 15 goals. She recorded her 100th career point in the win over Franklin Pierce on February 18th. Sophomore Leah Hansen has eight goals and Rippon has 11 goals, two assists and 13 draw controls. Jaclyn Grzelaczyk is second on the team with 21 points on nine goals and a team-high 12 assists. Freshmen Maeghan Callow has three goals and an assist and Andrea Mott also has scored a goal with an assist. Lindsey Shimborske has two goals and two assists.

·         Senior Erin Shimborske is second on the team with six assists with nine goals, 15 ground balls and 11 caused turnovers. Lindsey Shimborske has a team-high 23 caused turnovers, 17 ground balls and 23 draw controls. Graduate student Micayla Brady is second on the team with 15 caused turnovers and has 15 ground balls.

·         Junior Olivia Maute is 2-4 in goal with 38 saves, a .358 save percentage and 12.36 goals-against average in 330 minutes of action. Freshman Olivia LaMonica made five saves in the second half of the win over Assumption on March 1st to earn her first collegiate win.

·         The Mavericks are 9-3 all-time against Roberts Wesleyan and have won the last two meetings.

·         Mercy is ranked No. 12 nationally in the IWLCA poll and No. 18 nationally in the Nike/USA Lacrosse Magazine poll.

·         Mercy won their third straight ECC Regular Season Championship and second ECC Tournament Championship last season.

·         The Mavericks qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season and fourth time overall.

·         Mercy is 47-17 in their last 64 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·         Mercy has had eight straight winning seasons and have made the ECC Tournament in six straight years.

·         The Mavericks were picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll and Brady was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

·         Brady was also named USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Second Team All-American after being named Third Team All-American by the publication last season.

·         Brady and Lindsey Shimborske were named Second Team All-Region last season by the IWLCA.

·         Brady was named ECC Defender of the Year and Shimborske was tabbed Rookie of the Year last season. Leading the All-Conference returners for the Mavericks are Brady, Shimborske and junior Kelly Rosenfeld who were named First Team All-ECC. Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk, graduate student Alexandra Bigilin, Erin Shimborske and junior Christina Lopreato also return after being named Second Team All-ECC last season.

Scouting the Redhawks

·         Roberts Wesleyan is coming off a 20-9 win over Franklin Pierce on March 17th.

·         The Redhawks were picked second in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 9-6 last season, falling to Mercy in the ECC Championship Game.

·         Roberts Wesleyan is led by Annie Mulhall who has an ECC-best 28 goals with two assists and by Emma Blumenstock who is second in the ECC with 33 points on 21 goals and 12 assists. She also has 12 ground balls and eight caused turnovers.

·         Alexis Grant has 27 points on 20 goals and seven assists and Tori Lammes has 14 goals and 10 assists. Madelyn Robinson has a team-high 14 caused turnovers and Emma Taylor has 12 caused turnovers and a team-high 26 ground balls.

·         Sophia Podszebka has a team-high 47 draw controls and Shawna Lesmerises is 5-4 in goal with 65 saves, a .401 save percentage and 10.78 goals-against average.

Next Game

Mercy resumes action on Wednesday, March 29th when they play at Bentley at 3 p.m.
