Game Preview: No. 1 Women's Lacrosse Hosts No. 4 D'Youville in ECC Championship Semifinal on Thursday

DOBBS FERRY, N.Y. (May 1, 2023) – The No. 1 seed Mercy College women's lacrosse team hosts No. 4 seed D'Youville University in an ECC Women's Lacrosse Championship Semifinal matchup on Thursday, May 4th at 12 p.m.

Scouting the Mavericks

·         Mercy is coming off a 19-6 win over Daemen on Saturday in their regular season finale. The Mavericks were led by sophomore Leena Moussa who had a game-high five goals.

·         Graduate student Jaclyn Grzelaczyk was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week, sophomore Lindsey Shimborske was named Defensive Player of the Week, freshman Andrea Mott was tabbed Rookie of the Week and sophomore Leah Hansen was tabbed to the Honor Roll on Monday.

·         Mott was named ECC Offensive Player of the Week last Monday and sophomore Lindsey Shimborske and graduate student Emma Rippon were tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·         Mott was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 17th.

·         Sophomore Leah Hansen was named to the ECC Honor Roll on April 10th.

·         Lindsey Shimborske and graduate student Jaclyn Grzelaczyk were tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on April 3rd.  

·         Lindsey Shimborske was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week for the fourth time this season on March 27th and junior Christina Lopreato was tabbed to the Honor Roll.

·         Jaclyn Grzelaczyk was named to the ECC Honor Roll on March 20th.

·         Shimborske was tabbed to the ECC Honor Roll on March 13th.

·         Shimborske was named ECC Defensive Player of the Week on March 6th for the third straight week and graduate student Micayla Brady was tabbed to the Honor Roll. Sophomore Leena Moussa has been named to the ECC Honor Roll twice and Rippon was tabbed to the Honor Roll on February 20th.

·         Moussa has a team-high 49 goals with four assists on the year and five draw controls. Graduate student Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk is second on the team with 37 goals. She recorded her 100th career point in the win over Franklin Pierce on February 18th. Sophomore Leah Hansen has 34 goals and three assists and Rippon has 35 goals, six assists and 66 draw controls. Jaclyn Grzelaczyk leads the team with 60 points on 27 goals and a team-high 33 assists. Freshman Maeghan Callow has six goals and four assists and freshman Andrea Mott has 13 goals and 20 assists. Lindsey Shimborske has two goals and three assists.

·         Senior Erin Shimborske is third on the team with 10 assists with 16 goals, 32 ground balls and 22 caused turnovers. Lindsey Shimborske has a team-high 48 caused turnovers, 44 ground balls and 72 draw controls. She recorded her 100th career draw control against Roberts Wesleyan. Graduate student Micayla Brady is second on the team with 29 caused turnovers and has 33 ground balls.

·         Junior Olivia Maute is 9-6 in goal with 78 saves, a .370 save percentage and 11.06 goals-against average in 721:32 minutes of action. Freshman Olivia LaMonica is 2-0 in goal with 30 saves, a .455 save percentage and 7.20 goals-against average in 300 minutes.

·         The Mavericks are 4-0 all-time against D'Youville.

·         Mercy is ranked No. 20 nationally in the IWLCA poll.

·         The Mavericks have secured their seventh straight ECC Tournament berth. Mercy earned a share of the ECC Regular Season Championship for the fourth straight season.

·         Mercy looks to advance to the Final for the sixth straight season.

·         The Mavericks have won two ECC Tournament Championships and look to win the Championship for the second straight season.

·         Mercy won their third straight ECC Regular Season Championship and second ECC Tournament Championship last season.

·         The Mavericks qualified for the NCAA Tournament for the third straight season and fourth time overall last season.

·         Mercy is 55-19 in their last 74 games dating back to the start of the 2019 season.

·         Mercy has had eight straight winning seasons.

·         The Mavericks were picked first in the ECC Preseason Poll and Brady was tabbed Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.

·         Brady was also named USA Lacrosse Magazine Preseason Second Team All-American after being named Third Team All-American by the publication last season.

·         Brady and Lindsey Shimborske were named Second Team All-Region last season by the IWLCA.

·         Brady was named ECC Defender of the Year and Shimborske was tabbed Rookie of the Year last season. Leading the All-Conference returners for the Mavericks are Brady, Shimborske and junior Kelly Rosenfeld who were named First Team All-ECC. Kaitlyn Grzelaczyk, graduate student Alexandra Bigilin, Erin Shimborske and junior Christina Lopreato also return after being named Second Team All-ECC last season.

Scouting the Saints

·         D'Youville is coming off a 10-5 loss to Roberts Wesleyan on Saturday.

·         The Saints were picked fourth in the ECC Preseason Poll after going 9-8 last season.

·         D'Youville is making their second straight ECC Tournament appearance and look to advance to the Final for the first time.

·         D'Youville is led by one-time ECC Offensive Player of the Week and one-time Rookie of the Week Sam Newlin who has a team-high 60 points on a team-high 53 goals with seven assists, 25 ground balls, 17 caused turnovers and a team-high 56 draw controls. Sydney Gordon has 41 goals and 16 assists and Madison Buck has 22 goals and a team-high 27 assists.

·         Madison Handley has 33 goals and 12 assists. Lauren Parker has 36 ground balls with a team-high 20 caused turnovers.

·         Two-time ECC Defensive Player of the Week Brinn Stworzydlak is 8-9 in goal with 173 saves, a .482 save percentage and 11.44 goals-against average.

Next Game

The winner of Thursday's game will play in the ECC Championship Final on Sunday, May 7th at the highest remaining seed.
