WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (Sept. 11, 2023) – Mercy University men's soccer junior Eirik Elvestad (Oslo, Norway/Blindern VGS) has been named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week, freshman Marius Pignat-Larsen (Copenhagen, Denmark/Rysensteen Gymnasium) has been tabbed Rookie of the Week and senior Carlos Fernandes (Lisbon, Portugal/Spring Hill College) has been tabbed to the Honor Roll for Week Two.

Elvestad went 1-0-1 in goal with six saves, a .857 save percentage and 0.50 goals-against average. The junior made two saves with just one goal allowed in the draw against Adelphi on Wednesday. The goalkeeper ended the week with four saves to earn the shutout win over Southern Connecticut State on Saturday.

Pignat-Larsen helped lead a Mavericks backline that did not allow a goal in the 135 minutes he played. Against Adelphi on Wednesday, the freshman played the second half and helped lead Mercy to a 1-1 draw. On Saturday against Southern Connecticut State, Pignat-Larsen played all 90 minutes and led a Maverick backline that earned a 1-0 shutout win over the Owls.

Fernandes scored the game-winning goal in the 53rd minute to give Mercy a 1-0 win over Southern Connecticut State on Saturday.

The awards are the first this season for Elvestad and Pignat-Larsen and the second for Fernandes. Mercy has now received five awards on the year.

Head Coach Pedro Velazquez and the Mavericks resume action on Wednesday, September 13th when they play at AIC at 7 p.m.
