COLONIA, N.J. (Aug. 23, 2024) – The Mercy University volleyball team has been picked to finish second in the East Coast Conference (ECC) Preseason Coaches' Poll, as announced by the conference office earlier today. The top four teams in the standings at the end of the season qualify for the ECC Championship.
Daemen received four first-place votes and 45 points overall to top the poll. Mercy received two first-place votes and 40 points overall to place second in the poll. Molloy's Kiarra Roth was named Preseason Player of the Year.
Mercy went 15-9 last season, winning their first NCAA Tournament match since 2001 in their first NCAA appearance since 2005. The Mavericks qualified for the ECC Championship for the fourth straight season and posted their most wins in a season since 2005.
Head Coach Ana Todorovic and the Mavericks return graduate student Julia Pomerleau who was named Second Team All-ECC last season after hitting .401 with 205 kills and 63 blocks. Pomerleau led the team in blocks and hitting percentage and was second in kills last season. Also returning is senior Anyelainy Vizcaino who was named All-ECC Honorable Mention in 2022. Vizcaino had 200 kills, 32 aces, 95 digs and 23 blocks in 2023. Senior Aitza Cruz also returns for Todorovic after ranking second on the team with 247 digs last season.
The Mavericks open their 2024 season on Thursday, September 5th when they host Post at 7 p.m.
