COLONIA, N.J. – Mercy University Baseball senior Samuel Gil (Bronx, N.Y./St. Bonaventure University) has been named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Baseball Pitcher of the Week for Week Two and sophomores Anthony Altobelli (Kings Park, N.Y./Kings Park) and Geneo Savoca (Albany, N.Y./University at Albany) have been named to the Honor Roll.
Gil pitched 4.1 scoreless innings of relief across three appearances with two saves, three strikeouts and just one hit allowed. The senior opened the week with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief at UNC Pembroke with two strikeouts. The pitcher recorded the final out to earn the save in Mercy's 6-5 win over Post on Friday. Gil ended the week with 2.0 scoreless innings of relief with one strikeout to earn the save in Mercy's 13-11 win over RV Bentley on Sunday.
Altobelli hit .556 (5-for-9) with three RBI, a home run, two runs and one double as Mercy went 2-2 on the week. The sophomore opened the week going 1-for-3 with two RBI and a double in game two against Post on Friday. Altobelli ended the week going 4-for-6 with two runs, his first collegiate home run and one RBI in Mercy's win over RV Bentley on Sunday.
Savoca went 1-0 on the mound, pitching 4.0 innings of relief with two earned runs allowed and four strikeouts to earn the win in Mercy's 13-11 win over RV Bentley on Sunday. The sophomore also went 2-for-8 at the plate with two runs and one stolen base. Savoca went 1-for-3 with a run at UNC Pembroke on Tuesday and went 1-for-4 with a run and a stolen base in the win over Post on Friday.
The award is the first for all three this season. Mercy has now earned six awards on the year.
Head Coach Chris Schoen and the Mavericks resume action on Saturday when they play at Southern Connecticut State at 12 pm.
