WEST BABYLON, N.Y. (May 9, 2022) – Mercy College freshman Jaden Caballero (Newburgh, N.Y./Newburgh Free Academy) has been named the East Coast Conference (ECC) Baseball Rookie of the Week for the third time and senior James Mattutat (Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) was named to the Honor Roll for Week 12.
Caballero hit a team-high .538 (7-for-13) with a team-high four runs. He also had a double, triple, and an RBI. The freshman opened the week going 1-for-4 with a run at Dominican on Wednesday. Caballero then went 2-for-4 with a run at Queens on Thursday. The shortstop ended the week going 4-for-5 with two runs, a double, a triple, and an RBI in the win over Queens on Sunday.
Mattutat hit .462 (6-for-13) with a team-high seven RBI and four doubles. The senior also had two runs and one triple. The first baseman opened the week going 1-for-3 with a double at Dominican on Wednesday. Mattutat then went 1-for-4 with an RBI at Queens on Thursday. The senior ended the week going 4-for-6 with a career-high six RBI to go along with two runs, three doubles and a triple in the win over Queens on Sunday.
The award is the fourth earned by Caballero this season and the first for Mattutat. Mercy has now earned 15 awards on the year.
